Inner Critic
This is something I’ve been reflecting on for a few weeks, whether or not my inner critic is being constructive or a liar. And I have come to realise that the lies are usually connected to who I am and my abilities and the critic is related to the science and the art of my craft.
Beverly Engel encourages, ‘Turn down the volume of your negative inner voice and create a nurturing inner voice to take its place. When you make a mistake, forgive yourself, learn from it, and move on instead of obsessing about it. Equally important, don’t allow anyone else to dwell on your mistakes or shortcomings or to expect perfection from you.’
This is true in every area of our lives, not just when we are developing our art. Is fascinating to me how much artistry can be a battlefield of the mind. But let’s make a commitment to turn down the volume, nurture the goodness and not be so hard on ourselves. Allow for the imperfection—it’s what makes your art unique.
