Work
Yesterday was a bad writing day. Let me rephrase that, yesterday was a bad day. There was no writing. I was a little bit flat and so didn’t feel like doing any writing. Feel...this is a word that robs worlds.
Confession time: my flatness was somewhat timely as I’ve been avoiding a particular chapter. It’s actually already written, but I’m not happy with it and I know that I need to make it more immersive for the reader.
Fancy a bit of insight as to how I combat these annoying feelings of flatness? It’s a boring answer I’m afraid—not even remotely sexy. I slipped into my routine. There, I said it—the R-word. Yuk. And I’m gonna throw in the D-word too. Discipline. Eurgh.
My morning routine generally looks like this—a walk, meditation and prayer, breakfast, a shower and getting dressed. And once I’m dressed, I spritz myself with aftershave. I know—it’s weird—I work from home. But here’s the inside scoop—it reminds me of my old office job. I may be wearing my comfy jeans and a super old t-shirt and big jumper (it’s winter here in Australia), but I’m wearing an expensive aftershave because it sets the tone for my day. The scent tells me I mean business.
Whether I write the best, most immersive and compelling chapter or not doesn’t matter. What matters is that I showed up. I didn’t feel like showing up, but I did it anyway. And most importantly—I smelt good.
