Your Own Reasons

‘Your own reasons to make art are reasons enough. Do whatever causes a revolution in your heart.’Elizabeth Gilbert.Whenever I’m asked why I write, I have one simple response, ‘I write to understand myself and to understand the world around me better.’ Writing puts me in a position where I am forced to think about who I am and what I believe—both about myself and the world I find myself in, particularly when it comes to developing my own fiction. When writing for clients using their intellectual property, this too opens my mind in a way I had not expected. I begin to see the world through their eyes and honestly it blows my mind. I say this often, “I’m basically being paid to learn!” And truthfully, I love that.Sure I had found my own reasons enough to write and they affected me deeply, but I did not anticipate that writing for other people would lead to a revolution not just of my mind, but of my heart. People, their stories, their intellect and their expertise are amazing. I count it a privilege to use my passion to bring expression and give form to someone else’s.
